M1911 & M1911A1 Barrel Reference
Barrels are one of the most important parts to review when evaluating U.S. military
M1911 and M1911A1 pistols. Barrel markings, finish, wear, and proof marks should be
compared with the pistol serial range, manufacturer, and service history.
Barrel Review Checklist
| Area | What To Review |
| Markings | Look for manufacturer, proof, caliber, and inspection marks. |
| Finish | Compare barrel finish to the frame, slide, and expected production period. |
| Wear | Wear should be compared to the rest of the pistol. A very fresh barrel in a worn pistol may indicate replacement. |
| Period Fit | Check whether the barrel style fits the pistol serial range and production period. |
| Service Replacement | Replacement barrels are common on military pistols and should be documented accurately. |
Common Barrel Categories
| Category | Collector Notes |
| Original Production Barrel | Best match when markings, finish, wear, and period features align with the pistol. |
| Period Replacement Barrel | May still be historically appropriate if installed during service life. |
| Arsenal Replacement Barrel | Often seen on rebuilt pistols; should be considered part of service history. |
| Modern Replacement Barrel | May function well but should not be described as original military production. |
Collector Note:
A barrel should never be evaluated by marking alone. Compare serial range, finish,
wear pattern, proof marks, small parts, and service history together.
